I frightened my Doctors to death this past week, with a blood pressure reading of 190/90 and a blood glucose reading of 36 (normal is between 4 and 10), so with threats of strokes, diabetic comas, and hospitalization, they have placed me on a low GI diet.
I have bought a book all about it which has some recipes, and was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions. The book is called the GI revolution, previously known as the GI Factor.
Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance

I, too, would like to find some great GI recipes, mostly main meals. I have looked at the sites listed here, and they didn't help much. The only thing I can think of is to eat whole grain rice topped with kidney or lentil beans and perhaps some red peppers (yuk?!). Or I'll be eating a lot of vegetable soup until I can find some more enticing recipes that will fit into my limited budget.

Hi Olyc4000, welcome to the forum.
Wholegrain rice is not low GI, it is actually high GI - but Basmati rice is. Pastas are better than rice. Also, replace potatoes with sweet potatoes and remember white is not good, it is usually very high in GI. One very nice low GI recipe is listed in the recipe section. It is called Hearty Beef and Barley Soup, very easy to prepare, delicious and my husband and I have it as a main meal because it is so filling. We usually have a wholegrain roll with it. Absolutely yummy. I will soon be posting more low GI recipes, so keep an eye on the recipe section.

Hi there
I am a newbie on a low GI diet too. I had a heart scare a few weeks ago, so I must lose approx 60 kilos. I have got the same book as you and also the Life Plan by the same authors. I am finding the diet easy to follow and lots of my regular receipes are easily convertable. I have lost a few kilos and already feel a heap better, not nearly as tired as I was. Used to find I could fall asleep around 3-4.00pm every day, not easy when you are at work! But I feel much better even now. I made the Apple Crumble last night from the GI revolution, as after 3 weeks I was fancying something hot and sweet. It was lovely and very basic. Will post some receipes that I have made along the way, we can trade them! Will keep you posted as I go!
One of my easy receipes doesn't take long, adjust quantites to suit.
Chicken and Mushrooms in Creamy Lemon Sauce
Saute 2 seasoned (with pepper and salt) skinless chicken breasts in a small amount of Olive Oil
Add juice of a whole lemon and quarter of a cup of chicken stock.
Poach until cooked through (with lid on), approx 15 mins turning once
Add quartered button mushrooms and chopped shallots, cook a further 2 mins then add approx half a cup of light evaporated skim milk, stir through until combined and heated.
Serve with steamed Green vegetables.

Hi Jacqui and welcome to the forum.
That recipe sounds delicious, I will be sure to try it soon. Perhaps you could post your recipes in the recipe forums, that is what I intend to do. I bought some apples yesterday to make the Apple Crumble, but I can't find them today LOL. They must be still in the car, which my husband has today, as I decided to stay home and unpack, seeing we've just moved this week!
It sure is great to know there are others who are on the low GI foods. I didn't know much about it until recently, so am still learning.
All the best,
Yellowroses

Hi YellowRoses,
Been reading all the old posts and have been just amazed at your progress. Good on ya! I think this low GI stuff makes pretty good sense, don't you? Seems to me that the authors have invested a lot of scientific reasoning into this, with all their research etc, and I am keen to follow their ideas through.
Yes, I will post my receipes on the receipe forum, I am no gourmet chef, but anyway, maybe someone will get a new idea or too! Look forward to chatting low GI stuff with you and Lynn! It's great to know there is some support out there.
Best Wishes

Hi
I have just come across this forum after doing a search for low GI diets. I am 32 week pregnant and my Dr has just discovered that I have gestational diabetes, and has told me (in no uncertain terms) to change my diet to low GI. I have found a great web site that has loads of low carb recipes. I have yet to try any but some of them sound great. The web address is:
http://www.shakeoffthesugar.net/article1032.html
I hope this will help you in your quest for low carb recipes

There are 2 good books out by Rick Gallop, titled g.i. diet and living the g.i. diet. He also has a website, http://www.gidiet.com
I have only just started the diet, so can't tell you how good the recipes are. But I did want to say thank you to Yellowroses for her Beef and Barley Soup recipe. It's very yummy.

I just bought another great book with low GI recipes. It's called The Good Carb Cookbook by Sandra Woodruff. I'm hoping to try out some of her recipes this week or next. I'll let you know how they are.

Hi yellowroses,
I've been reading the past posts on this topic. I also have read this book - probably the earlier version. It was recommended for my husband who is diabetic.
Low GI is really good, but there's a trap. Don't go all out on the low GI carbs like we did. When I discovered Basmati rice (it's a great rice!) we almost OD'd on it . There was the thought that because it's low GI you can eat as much of it as you like, BUT YOU CAN'T!
These days we have rice or pasta or potato only about once a week, whereas before it was every night. My husband has 2-3 slices of bread a day but I have it very rarely these days, and I feel so much better for it.
These days we eat a lot of vegies. I put a big microwave bowl full of kumara, beans, zuccini, cauliflower, peas, spinach etc. into the microwave and steam them and use the "left-overs" the next day. You can't go wrong with vegetables - except potatoes
I've also learnt to use legumes such as lentils, beans and so on in soups and salads.

I suffer from Low Blood Sugar and the key to making the GI work for you is following everything strictly for the first 3 months.
You can get recipes off the net, other diabeties books now have a GI rating.
Eventually you will be so used to understanding your dietry restrictions that putting a meal together will be easy.
www.glycemicindex.com
This is a good site to find the value of everyday foods.

I've been doing low G.I. for about 6 months now and I've lost 45 pounds. I love it! I don't have to weigh and measure and count anything, it's easy to follow, and I make delicious meals that my husband loves. No complaints from him at all, and he's lost 23 pounds himself.

Hi Yellowroses,
Just stumbled onto your forum. Sorry to hear about your visit to the Doctor. What type of lifestyle do you lead that caused such extreme readings....? If you have purchased the GI Revolution you just need to become familiar with substituting your current food types for those listed in the book. Following a low GI Diet was first designed to help diabetics deal with the insulin resistance. It is also helpful to any women suffering from PCOS (Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome).
Make sure you have plenty of fruit on hand such as apples, pears, berries etc. Try to avoid bananas or if you love them (just a hint) mix medium and high GI rated foods with low GI to reduce the overall GI Value. (High+Low+Medium)
Good Luck with your quest

I was pleased to find this thread entitled Low G.I. recipes, because I'm always looking for new ones ... but I noted a lot of the links are for Low Carb recipe sites ... I just want to make sure everyone knows it's not the same thing. I've run into people on yahoo groups who confuse the two, so I want to be sure you realize, you CAN have carbs and still lose weight. And believe me, I eat lots of them. I have cereal, bread and pasta almost every day. I don't follow anyone's "plan" but rather just try to always choose low G.I. foods at every meal. It works, it really does!

I am really enjoying a low GI diet at the moment and although I don't seem to have lost much weight. I feel great and I'm sure through consistancy the weight will slowly come away. (I have had a couple of bouts of Pizza and pudding attack). I came accross it by reading the Montignac Method book. I really enjoyed reading it. It was light reading and very informative - with heaps of ideas to get you going. I have just ordered the recipe book.
My favourite is poached eggs on burgen soy and linseed bread. mmm My kids love that too.
There are healthy eating magazines at the supermarket coming out with low GI recipes now too. Some of them have ingredients I never heard of, but if you are good at adapting and experimenting with your ingredients then you can give them a try.
All the best

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum and to Low GI. Could anyone tell me if there is a way to tell if a product (say cereal ) is Low GI. Can you work it out from the nutritional panel??

I love whole wheat pasta, and I thought I never would. Now I feel a little disappointed with pasta when we order out at a restaurant because I enjoy wholewheat pasta more.
