This morning when I woke up, I noticed my stomach was sore (guess that means those flabby abs were working).  I worked out again, but then remembered what Bill Phillips would say.

Does my body need a day to recover for optimal results?  Should I do this every day or give my muscles time to heal and get bigger?

Thanks!

Hi...new here...

Well, here's my take on it. They say you should let the muscles rest to repair every other day. However, throughout history, all the way up until the mid-20th century, people did use their muscles every single day. Not the aristocracy, but the "regular" people. It certainly didn't seem to hinder their muscular development and for the most part, as far as anyone can tell, they had a whole lot less trouble keeping weight off than we did. (In fact, it was keeping weight on that was often the problem!)

Doing physical work every single day didn't hinder their growth, either. Contrary to popular belief, people weren't always "smaller"/shorter/etc. than they are today. In fact, up until late Medieval times, people were the same size they are now, according to archaeological finds. (My but this is involved for a first post. ) Then, from about 1600 onward, there was such a population explosion following the previous mass deaths (black death, etc.) that overcrowding caused malnutrition, and that's when people started getting smaller.

So, bottom line: I don't think being physical every day for 30 minutes is going to hinder muscle growth. We don't even have to stand up to change the TV channel, so I doubt the amount of effort we might put into Pilates--what, 30, 60 minutes a day?--even comes close to the tearing of muscle that previous generations withstood just to even get through their day. I say, if you feel like working out every day, go for it! You should be fine.

I work out on weights. The trainers say that it takes a day for the muscle to rest. So what I do is my arms one day and the legs the next. I see no harm in sit ups every day. With pilates , I learned how to do sit ups correctly dor the most benefit.
Walking and swimming are good exercizes for weight loss.

If you are just starting out, i wouldnt work out
everyday since your body is not used to the exercise
and you might hurt yourself. I personally believe that
you should have a day between working out with
weights to give your muscles time to heal and
recover.

HOwever, if you are doing fairly low impact work,
such as walking or light weights, it probably won't
hurt too much if you exercise everyday. If you are
doing strenous workouts you should take time off.

I do strength training tue-thurs-sat and cardio 3
times a week or so, and that is working out well for
me.

re the people in history doing hard physical labor
everyday, that is a different situation then someone
who is simply doing a workout routine. There are
still labourers like that today who work hard all day
and sure, they stay fit and have muscle development
etc. However, if you are working out every day, you
have to continue this trend in order to avoid losing all
the hard work you have put in to get your muscles. I
don't think most people can exercise for hours
everday for their entire life. Also, in a historical
sense, those people had no choice and were
generally overworked and died younger due to
malnutrition etc.

Thank you all for your responses.

My pilates routine is fairly strenuous (for my 273 lb self).  I feel my abs being worked a lot.  Today they are quite sore.  Perhaps they should have a day to recover now and then.

Tomorrow I will stretch my back and hope that is enough to keep the pain away.  I SERIOUSLY need upper body work (I look like a tomato on stilts) so I will start doing hand weight for the upper body every other day.

Thanks for sharing your opinions!!!  Your experience and knowlege are very much appreciated.

There is nothing wrong in working out and building muscles
as long as one is not overdoing it. If the body feels sore
already, it's a cue that one should take a rest for a
while.
